A Thoughtful Morning and Evening Ritual for Healthy, Radiant Skin

Rooted Wisdom Botanical Brief™

By Heather Nature, Founder & Formulator, Petal & Root®

Beautiful skin is rarely the result of a single product. It is built through consistent care, intentional rituals, and formulas designed to work in harmony with the skin.

Throughout the day, your skin encounters environmental stressors such as ultraviolet radiation, pollution, dry air, heat, and fluctuating temperatures. At night, your skincare routine can shift its emphasis from daytime protection toward hydration, barrier support, and treatment.

That is the philosophy behind the Petal & Root® Morning & Evening Facial Collection: thoughtful formulas designed to nourish and support the skin throughout the day, then replenish and restore it as part of your evening ritual.

Featuring carefully selected botanicals, modern skincare actives, and thoughtfully sourced plant-derived ingredients, each formula is created with purpose, compatibility, texture, and performance in mind.

The result is a skincare ritual that brings together botanical wisdom and modern skin science, transforming everyday skincare into a luxurious moment of self care.

Morning Ritual: Protect, Hydrate & Defend

The purpose of a morning routine is simple: prepare the skin for the day ahead by maintaining hydration, supporting the skin barrier, incorporating antioxidant rich ingredients, and, most importantly, protecting the skin from ultraviolet exposure.

Step One: Green Tea, Rose & Aloe pH Balancing Botanical Toner

Begin with botanical hydration.

Our Green Tea, Rose & Aloe pH Balancing Botanical Toner combines Rosa Damascena hydrosol, cucumber hydrosol, aloe vera, green tea extract, and Vitamin B5 to refresh the complexion after cleansing and prepare the skin for the treatments that follow. Rose hydrosol provides a soothing botanical component, while aloe vera and humectant ingredients help support hydration. Green tea is naturally rich in polyphenols with antioxidant activity, making it an especially fitting botanical for a daytime skincare ritual.

The result is skin that feels refreshed, hydrated, and prepared for the next steps of your routine.

Ideal for: Normal, dry, combination, mature, and sensitive skin.

Especially beneficial for: Dehydration, dullness, and skin that feels stressed or uncomfortable.

Step Two: Nectar Peptide + Amino Undereye Serum

Give the delicate eye area targeted hydration and support.

The skin surrounding the eyes is thinner and more delicate than much of the facial skin, making hydration and barrier support particularly important.

Nectar Peptide + Amino Undereye Serum was formulated around a sophisticated combination of peptides, amino acids, humectants, ceramides, and botanical ingredients.

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 and caffeine are included to support the appearance of a more refreshed eye area, while hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, betaine, and aloe vera contribute to hydration. Ceramide NP and panthenol complement the formula with barrier supportive ingredients.

Ceramides are important components of the skin barrier and have been studied for their role in improving moisture retention and supporting barrier function when incorporated into topical formulations.

The lightweight texture layers beautifully beneath the rest of your morning skincare and makeup.

Ideal for: All skin types, especially mature and dehydrated skin.

Especially beneficial for: Dehydration, the appearance of puffiness, and fine lines associated with dryness.

Step Three: Morning Radiance Vitamin C Facial Serum

Nourish, illuminate, and support antioxidant care.

Morning Radiance Vitamin C Facial Serum was created to deliver botanical nourishment, antioxidant support, and a luminous finish without leaving the skin feeling heavy.

The formula begins with olive-derived squalane and jojoba oil, lightweight emollients that help soften the skin and support a comfortable, supple feel. A rich botanical infusion of vanilla bean, calendula, chamomile, lavender, hibiscus, jasmine, osmanthus, frankincense, and myrrh gives the elixir its distinctive botanical character while complementing the formula's nourishing profile.

At the heart of the formula is 7% tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, or THD ascorbate, an oil-soluble derivative of Vitamin C. Topical Vitamin C has been studied for its antioxidant, photoprotective, anti-aging, and pigmentation related benefits, although the performance of Vitamin C depends heavily on the specific derivative, concentration, delivery system, and stability of the finished formulation.

Morning Radiance is designed to leave the complexion soft, nourished, and visibly luminous.

Ideal for: Normal, dry, mature, and combination skin.

Especially beneficial for: Dullness, uneven skin tone, moisture loss, and visible signs of aging.

Step Four: Bloom Deep Hydration + Barrier Support Moisturizing Facial Cream

Hydration works best when the skin can retain it.

Bloom Deep Hydration + Barrier Support Moisturizing Facial Cream was developed to help replenish moisture while supporting the skin's protective barrier through a thoughtful combination of botanical and modern skincare ingredients.

Aloe vera, colloidal oat, hyaluronic acid, ectoin, phytoceramides, jojoba oil, squalane, apricot kernel oil, and shea butter work together to provide lasting hydration and a rich, cushion like texture. Hyaluronic acid is a well established humectant used in topical skincare, while ceramide containing formulations have demonstrated potential to improve hydration and barrier function. Ectoin is another carefully selected ingredient in Bloom, valued for its ability to support hydration and help skin maintain resilience under environmental stress.

Together, these ingredients help leave skin feeling comfortable, nourished, and hydrated throughout the day.

Ideal for: Dry, sensitive, mature, normal, and combination skin.

Especially beneficial for: Dryness, rough texture, dehydration, and skin that feels compromised or uncomfortable.

Step Five: Finish With Broad-Spectrum SPF

Protect the skin you have nourished.

The final step of your morning routine should be a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against both UVA and UVB radiation and is an important part of a comprehensive approach to reducing UV related skin damage and premature visible signs of aging. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying enough sunscreen and reapplying approximately every two hours when outdoors, as well as after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

For those who prefer mineral UV protection, look for a formula containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.

Why Mineral Sunscreen?

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are mineral UV filters used in broad-spectrum sunscreen formulations. Zinc oxide is particularly useful because it provides broad-spectrum UV protection.

Current evidence also supports the general conclusion that zinc oxide particles, including nano sized particles used in some sunscreens, remain primarily within the outer layers of intact skin rather than penetrating into living tissue. However, particle size, formulation, skin condition, and application conditions can influence behavior, so "non-nano" should not automatically be treated as synonymous with "safer."

For that reason, we recommend choosing sunscreen based on the finished formulation, tested SPF performance, broad-spectrum protection, skin compatibility, and whether you will actually enjoy reapplying it throuhghout the day.

What to Look For

When selecting a mineral sunscreen, consider:

  • Broad-spectrum protection

  • SPF 30 or higher

  • Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as mineral UV filters

  • Water resistance if you will be swimming or sweating

  • A texture and finish you enjoy enough to apply generously

  • Fragrance-free or low irritant options if your skin is sensitive

  • Tinted formulas with iron oxides if visible light protection is an important consideration for pigmentation concerns

There is no universal requirement that a mineral sunscreen contain 20 to 25% zinc oxide, and mineral formulas vary significantly in their active ingredient concentrations and delivery systems. What matters most is the performance of the finished sunscreen, not simply a single ingredient percentage.

Our Mineral Sunscreen Picks

ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless SPF 50

Our top luxury pick

If you want a mineral sunscreen that feels like an extension of a sophisticated skincare routine, ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless SPF 50 is a standout option.

It is a 100% mineral SPF 50 formula containing 10.7% zinc oxide, along with peptides, Vitamin E, and the brand's DNA Repairsomes® technology. Its lightly tinted finish gives it a more elegant, skincare-like feel than many traditional mineral sunscreens.

This is a particularly appealing choice for someone who wants high performance mineral protection without a heavy or chalky finish.

Best untinted luxury mineral option

Price point: $73.00 (3.4 fl oz.)

If you prefer an untinted formula, ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica SPF 50+ is an excellent alternative.

It contains 11% zinc oxide along with Vitamin E and DNA Repairsomes® technology and is designed to provide lightweight, water resistant mineral protection for daily use. It is particularly appealing if you want a high end mineral sunscreen without a cosmetic tint.

Best for tinted, complexion-enhancing protection

Price point: $58.00 (1.8 fl oz.)

For those who want mineral sunscreen to function almost like complexion skincare, Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50 is another sophisticated option.

Its tinted formulation contains iron oxides. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides may provide additional protection against visible light, which is especially relevant when managing concerns involving hyperpigmentation and melasma.

It is a beautiful option for anyone who wants sunscreen that can function beneath makeup or in place of it.

Best for a dewy, skincare-like finish

Price point: $84.00 (3.2 fl oz.)

For a luminous finish, ALASTIN HydraTint Pro Mineral SPF 36 is a beautiful choice.

This mineral broad-spectrum sunscreen contains 3.4% zinc oxide and 8.9% titanium dioxide, along with ingredients such as squalane and ectoin. Its tinted, fragrance free formula provides a soft, dewy finish and is water resistant for 40 minutes.

It is especially appealing for mature or dry skin types that prefer a more radiant finish.

EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41

Best for sensitive and combination skin

Price point: $48.00 (3 fl oz.)

EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41 is another established mineral option. It is lightly tinted and formulated for sensitive, oily-to-normal, and combination skin. It is not as overtly luxurious as ISDIN or ALASTIN, but it is an excellent example of a clinically oriented mineral sunscreen for everyday wear.

The most important sunscreen is the one you will actually use consistently.

A beautiful formula that feels comfortable, applies generously, and fits naturally into your daily ritual is far more useful than a sunscreen you avoid because of its texture, cast, or finish.

Evening Ritual: Renew, Replenish & Restore

Your evening skincare routine does not need to be an entirely separate ritual from the morning. Instead, think of it as a continuation.

The foundation remains the same: cleanse, hydrate, treat, and moisturize. The difference is that evening skincare can place greater emphasis on replenishment, nourishment, and targeted treatment rather than daytime UV protection.

Step One: Green Tea, Rose & Aloe pH Balancing Botanical Toner

Return to the same hydrating botanical foundation.

Following cleansing, return to the Green Tea, Rose & Aloe pH Balancing Botanical Toner.

There is no need to reinvent the first step at night. The same hydrating botanical foundation that prepares the skin in the morning works beautifully in the evening, replenishing moisture before your treatment products.

Keeping this step consistent also makes your routine easier to follow.

Step Two: Nectar Peptide + Amino Undereye Serum

Continue targeted hydration around the eyes.

The delicate eye area deserves thoughtful care at night as well as during the day. Nectar Peptide + Amino Undereye Serum provides concentrated hydration and barrier supportive ingredients as part of the evening ritual.

Applied before your moisturizer, the lightweight serum helps the undereye area feel hydrated and refreshed while complementing the restorative products that follow.

Step Three: Evening Renewal Facial Elixir

Make the evening distinctly restorative.

This is where the evening ritual takes on a different character. Evening Renewal Facial Elixir with Bakuchiol and Green Tea combines jojoba oil, olive-derived squalane, rosehip oil, meadowfoam seed oil, pomegranate seed oil, sea buckthorn extract, and bakuchiol in a nutrient rich botanical oil treatment.

At the center of the formula is 2% bakuchiol, a plant-derived ingredient that has been studied for its potential to improve visible signs of photoaging.

In a 12 week randomized, double-blind clinical trial, topical bakuchiol produced improvements in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation comparable to retinol, while participants using retinol reported more scaling and stinging. Importantly, that study evaluated a specific 0.5% bakuchiol formulation, so results should not automatically be attributed to every bakuchiol containing product.

Evening Renewal brings that ingredient into a botanical ritual designed to leave skin feeling nourished and replenished overnight.

Rosehip, meadowfoam, pomegranate, and sea buckthorn further contribute to the formula's rich botanical profile and emollient character.

By morning, skin feels soft, nourished, and refreshed.

Ideal for: Dry, mature, normal, combination, and sensitive skin.

Especially beneficial for: Dullness, dehydration, uneven tone, and visible signs of aging.

Step Four: Bloom Deep Hydration + Barrier Support Moisturizing Facial Cream

Finish by sealing in hydration and supporting the barrier.

Bloom plays an important role in both morning and evening routines, but its role at night is particularly satisfying. Applied as the final step, it helps seal in the hydration and treatments layered beneath it while providing a rich, comforting finish.

Its combination of ectoin, phytoceramides, colloidal oat, squalane, and hyaluronic acid provides a multidimensional approach to hydration and barrier support.

The result is a complete day-to-night ritual: hydration and environmental defense during the day, followed by nourishment, treatment, and replenishment at night.

The Complete Petal & Root® Ritual

A luxurious skincare routine does not need to be complicated. It needs to be intentional.

Morning and evening skincare are not competing routines. They are two parts of the same ritual, each serving a different purpose within the day.

Morning

Nourish. Hydrate. Illuminate. Protect.

Evening

Cleanse. Replenish. Renew. Restore.

The beauty of this approach is its simplicity. Rather than constantly adding more products, create a thoughtful foundation and use each formula for a clear purpose.

With consistency, your skincare routine becomes more than a collection of products. It becomes a daily ritual, a moment to slow down, care for your skin, and reconnect with the botanical ingredients at the heart of the Petal & Root® philosophy.

The Petal & Root® Difference

Rooted in Nature. Guided by Science. Created with Intention.

At Petal & Root®, botanical ingredients are an important part of our identity, but thoughtful skincare requires more than simply choosing ingredients because they come from nature. Every ingredient is selected for a reason.

We combine botanical extracts, plant oils, naturally derived ingredients, vitamins, peptides, amino acids, and other modern skincare actives when they contribute meaningfully to the formula.

We consider not only the individual ingredient, but how ingredients work together within the finished formulation, including their purpose, compatibility, stability, texture, preservation, and sensory experience.

Because botanical skincare should never require compromising on performance. Our approach is rooted in respect for plants and informed by modern formulation knowledge. It is a balance between the wisdom of botanical ingredients and the precision of contemporary skincare science.

The result is skincare that feels indulgent, performs beautifully, and reflects a more intentional approach to self care. Healthy, radiant skin is not created through complicated routines or fleeting trends. It is supported through consistent care, thoughtful formulations, and rituals designed to nourish, protect, and restore the skin, morning and night.
