Rooted Wisdom: Castor Oil, Ricinus Communis
Botanical Brief No. 52
Castor oil’s use stretches back to ancient Egypt, where it was used for medicinal poultices and cosmetics.
It’s a unique oil, rich in ricinoleic acid, which gives it a thick, viscous, glossier feel.
Very occlusive ; locks in moisture and forms a barrier.
Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and gentle. Helps with minor skin irritations, cracked skin, and chapped surfaces.
In hair: supports eyebrow & eyelash strengthening, scalp soothing, and split-end sealing (in small amounts).
Often blended in small percentages to boost viscosity and barrier performance.
Thick texture means it can feel heavy or sticky if overused. Typically used in blends, not alone on face.
Because it's occlusive, in acne-prone skin overuse can trap sebum and congestion. Use strategically (spot, at night).
For eyelash use, avoid contact with eyes.
If using cold-pressed or unrefined castor, ensure purity (no contaminants).
Castor oil brings weight, grip, and lasting comfort to the skin, sealing in moisture and lending formulas a distinctive richness. Used judiciously, it anchors a blend, supports barrier integrity, and leaves the complexion supple, polished, and quietly resilient.
